When Your Destiny Seems Out Of Reach

God has a destiny for your life, a purpose and a plan for you. Right now He is working in your life towards that destiny. But what should you do when your destiny seems out of reach? Maybe you don’t see or feel God working, as we often don’t. Sometimes, the reason our destiny seems out of reach is because we are anticipating the big thing so much that we miss the little things God is doing to lead us towards it.

A Man Named Zerubbabel

There is a passage in the bible that speaks about a man named Zerubbabel (I haven’t seen that name in baby name books). God had a destiny for Zerubbabel and wanted him to finish the rebuilding of God’s Temple. However, the plan didn’t seem to be attainable.

In Zechariah 4:6-10b it says…

“Then he said to me, “This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: Not by might, nor by power, but by my Spirit, says the Lord of hosts. Who are you, O great mountain? Before Zerubbabel you shall become a plain. And he shall bring forward the top stone amid shouts of ‘Grace, grace to it!’” Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying, “The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also complete it. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent me to you. For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel.” – ‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭4:6-10‬ ‭ESV‬‬

What You Can Learn From Zerubbabel

There are 3 things in this passage that will help you when it seems like your destiny is out of reach:

1. God Has A Destiny For Your Life That Can Only Be Accomplished By God’s Spirit!

God has a purpose, a plan He has in progress in your life. As He works in your life, and you sense no progress, you will be tempted to do the work in your own strength. Don’t make this mistake!

Spiritual work can only be done by God’s Spirit.

He doesn’t want you to do a work for Him in your own strength and wisdom. He wants you to do a work with Him, in His strength and wisdom. Like Zerubbabel, you need to learn to lean on God and let Him work through you.

2. God’s Destiny For Your Life Is Found And Formed In The Little Things.

It has been said that big things come in small packages. Why then, is it the tendency of most people to overlook the little things? Whether little habits, small choices, a small amount of time and money, or people who appear to be little in our eyes. Most of us tend to overlook the small things in life. But it is the small choices and habits that make us who we are in the big moments. It is the compound growth of investing small amounts of time and money that produce great results. It is the people who seem little and insignificant whom God tends to use to do great things!

As God works in your life, He will give you little things to do, and small steps to take. Because they seem insignificant, you will be tempted to overlook them while you wait for the BIG thing God is doing. Don’t give into the temptation!

Don’t overlook the little things God has put in front of you to do.

Do them faithfully, by His spirit, not your strength. As you do, the work of God will take place in your life.

3. God’s Purpose And Plan For Your Life Will Face Opposition.

You and I have an enemy. He is a liar and will do anything to discourage you and prevent you from fulfilling God’s destiny for your life. Whether through your own thoughts or the voices of those who doubt God can use you, Satan will try to fill your mind with lies. The enemy wants you and others to see the little things God is asking you to do and scoff at them. He will try to discourage you with lies such as

  • “Why bother, you won’t get anywhere.”
  • “You aren’t gonna make a difference anyways”
  • “Quit now and stop wasting your time!”

Lies, Lies, Lies! None of this is true, so don’t listen to the lies of the enemy. Don’t grow discouraged by the seeming lack of progress or by the “little things” God is asking you to do. Don’t believe the lies of those who oppose you.

Don’t Overlook The Little Things!

God is working in you and through you. Be faithful to plow the row in front of you… to do what God has put in front of you during this season. Do it in His strength and wisdom, not your own. One day, you’ll look back and see you’ve been walking in God’s destiny all along. Then like Zerubbabel in the passage, you and those around you will rejoice at what God is accomplishing in and through your life!
